हीयते हि मतिस्तात हीनैः सह समागमात् ।

समैश्च समतामेति विशिष्टैश्च विशिष्टताम् ॥ - हितोपदेश

హీయతేహి మతిస్తాత! హీనైస్సహ సమాగమాత్ l

సమైశ్చ సమతామేతి విశిష్టైశ్చష్టై విశిష్టతాష్ట మ్ ll 

హీనులతో సహవాసము హీనపరచు నీ స్థితియును

నీ జ్ఞానము కృంగిపోవు నీ ధైర్యము వంగిపోవు

నీ సమాన స్థాయిని గల నిర్మల చిత్తుల నేస్తము

నీ స్థానమునున్నచోటె నిక్కముగా పదిలపరచు

జ్ఞాపకముంచుము నీదగు జ్ఞానులతో సావాసము

ఔన్నత్యము నీకు గూర్చు ఔదల దాల్చుము సూక్తిని

సంతప్తాయసి సంస్థితస్య పయసో నామాపి న శ్రూయతే

ముక్తాకారతయా తదేవ నలినీపత్రస్థితం దృశ్యతే ।

ప్రాయే ణాధమమధ్యమోత్తమ జుషా మేవంవిధా వృత్తయః ॥

నీరమే ముత్యమట్లు నలినీదళ సంస్థితమై దనర్చు నా

నీరమే శుక్తిలో బడి మణిత్వము గాంచు సమంచితప్రభన్

పౌరుష వృత్తులిట్లధము మధ్యము నుత్తము గొల్చు వారికిన్

కొందరు ప్రతిభ లేకుండానే రాణిస్తారు లేక ప్రతిభ కలిగిన మేరకు పూర్తిగా 

రాణించుతారు. కొందరు ప్రతిభకు మించి ప్రకాశించుతారు. కొందరు అప్రతిహతమైన 

ప్రతిభ కలిగి కూడా విధి అన్న అగ్నికి ఆహుతియైపోతారు. భర్తృహరి ఈ విషయాన్ని బహు 

చక్కగా వివరించినాడు. గమనించండి .

సంతప్తాయసి సంస్తితస్య పయసో నామాపి న శ్రూయతే

ముక్తాకారతయా తదేవ నళినీ పత్రస్థితందృశ్యతే

అంతస్సాగర శుక్తిమధ్య పతితం తన్మౌక్తికం జాయతే

ప్రాయేణాధమ మధ్యమోత్తమజుషా మేవంవిదా వృత్తయః

దీనికి ఏనుగు లక్ష్మణకవి వారి తెలుగు సేత

నీరము తప్త లోహమున నిల్చి యనామకమై నశించు, నా

నీరమే ముత్యమట్లు నళినీదళ సంస్థితమై దనర్చు నా

పౌరుష వృత్తులిట్లధము మధ్యము నుత్తము గొల్చు వారికిన్

ఒకే నీటి బిందువు కాలే ఇనుము పై బడితే ఆవిరియై పోతుంది, అదే తామర ఆకు 

పైబడితే ముత్యమువలె ప్రకాశిస్తుంది, మరి ముత్యపుచిప్పలోనే బడితే ముత్యమే అయి 

కూర్చుంటుంది. ఈ శ్లోకమున అధమ మధ్యమ ఉత్తమ పురుషులను, తగినంత విద్వత్తు 

ఒకే విధముగా ఉంది కూడా తమ తమ నెలవులను బట్టియే  తగిన గౌరవము 

లభించుతుంది. నిజానికి ఆయా వ్యక్తుల వద్ద పనిచేయవలసి వచ్చుట కూడా ఘటన లేక 

అదృష్టమే కదా! ఇందుకు కర్ణుడు,భీష్ముడు, ద్రోణుడు మొదలగువారు చక్కని 

ఉదాహరణ.

కావున పరిశీలించి, పరీక్షించి పరిశోధించి సజ్జన సాంగత్యము చేస్తే సర్వదా సుఖమయము.

समैश्च समतामेति विशिष्टैश्च विशिष्टताम् ॥ - हितोपदेश

नीच व्यक्तियों की संगती करने से बुद्धि क्षीण होती, अपने बराबरी लोगों की संगति से मति सामान ही 

रहती है लेकिन विशिष्ट लोगों की संगती से विद्वात्ता के  साथ कई और सुगुण प्राप्त होते हैं l

अल्प बुद्धि के सांगत से तुम अल्प हीन बन सकते हो

समबुद्धि से साथ जुड़े तो चढ़ नहीं सकता सीढी ऊपर

विद्वानों के साथ जुड़े तो विस्तृत यश तुम पासकते ओ

सोचको अपने ऊंचा करलो सुखमय जीवन सुबोध करलो

hīyate hi matistāta hīnaiḥ saha samāgamāt ।

samaiśca samatāmeti viśiṣṭaiśca viśiṣṭatām ॥- Hitopadeśa

Oh, Sir! In the company of the inferior, intellect attains inferiority; with

equals, it attains evenness; with the distinguished, it excels!

As is the company, so is the prosperity of the intellect.

Just as one rotten apple spoils the whole lot, a company of the

forsaken makes one perform deeds that are forbidden. There isn't

any positive growth. On the contrary, there is deterioration. At any

cost, one should keep away from such influences.

Being with equals does no harm to one's thinking prospects. They do

not drop in the growth chart, but they also do not attain greater

heights either. Their progress plateaus and knowledge stagnates.

Although this is not as bad as the previous kind of association, it isn't

very beneficial either.

Association of the distinguished and wise makes even a dull-witted

person, wise. There is no downside to this kind of company. One

does not fall off from his level of intellect nor does he stagnate.

However small, there is growth for sure! One should always aim at a

higher target and keep his eyes on goals that make him better with

each passing day. This is possible only when the company kept is

stellar.
